Start with the sentence that will protect your family from 90% of scams: the NMC does not "approve" any foreign medical university. There is no official "NMC-approved universities list." Any consultant showing you one is misleading you.
What NMC has done is set conditions the student and course must meet — the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) Regulations, 2021. Meet them and your degree can lead to an Indian licence; miss any one and it cannot, no matter how famous the university.
The FMGL 2021 checklist (plain language)
NEET qualified before joining the course.
Minimum 54 months of MBBS study at the foreign university.
12-month internship at the same university — not split across institutions or countries.
English medium of instruction.
The course/degree must license you to practice in the country of study — the degree can't be an "export-only" product.
After returning: clear FMGE, then complete a further internship/registration process in India as prescribed.
Registration timeline note: NMC expects the whole journey (course + internship + licensing steps) within 10 years of joining.
Why this matters more than ever in 2026
NMC issued public advisories in 2025 and 2026 cautioning students about specific institutions and countries — including warnings related to certain colleges in Belize and Uzbekistan — after students discovered mid-course that their programs didn't meet FMGL conditions. Those students lose years and lakhs with no path to an Indian licence. Verify before you pay, not after.
How to verify a university yourself (15 minutes)
Find it in the WHO World Directory of Medical Schools (search online — it's free).
Confirm it's a government/public university in that country (private is not automatically bad, but scrutiny doubles).
Ask the university in writing whether the 6-year English program includes the internship year at the same institution.
Search "NMC advisory" plus the country name for recent warnings.
Cross-check the fee structure on the university's own website, not the agent's brochure.
We do all five with you, on screen, in your first counselling session — that's what "zero hidden charges, honest counselling" means in practice.
Common questions we get from parents
"The agent says admission is guaranteed without NEET — possible?" You can physically enrol, but you will never practice in India. It's the single most damaging lie in this industry.
"Is a 5-year course okay?" Only if it still satisfies the 54-month + internship structure. Many 5-year programs don't. Get it in writing.
"What about NExT replacing FMGE?" As of mid-2026, FMGE remains the operative licensing exam; any transition will come with official notice. Plan for FMGE.
